Sam learnt the clarinet at school and, at the age of 13, became a member of the highly respected Northamptonshire Music School, performing at a high level with bands, orchestras and in chamber music.
He went on to read music at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He studied clarinet with Ruth McDowell (BBC S.O.) and performed in a variety of ensembles.
Sam has continued to perform in various groups on an ad hoc basis: ranging from small contemporary groups to full orchestras, in concerts and recordings.

A large part of Sam’s working life has been dedicated to teaching clarinet, saxophone, recorder and music theory. This has included peripatetic work for a variety of different schools and music services and individual private students, from beginners to advanced level.

He has been a regular coach on holiday courses and workshops, often focussing on woodwind section coaching. These have included Berwang Holiday Music (see photo above), Spring Music, LPO/Trinity Animate Orchestra, and the Lewisham Junior Orchestra.
